HCM Case List

The founders of Siberian Research would like to thank the breeders and pet owners who openly discussed and disclosed information about HCM cases and sudden deaths in the breed. Many of these individuals have also submitted DNA to universities studying the genetics involved.

Siberian Research dedicates this page to Siberian cats that have died, or have been diagnosed with Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy. This listing is a small number of the Siberians that have HCM, but it helps breeders understand where HCM has been mapped in the breed – and what lines were impacted. Only by understanding the risks associated with some prominent show lines, performing echocardiograms, supporting genetic research, and using careful breeding practices, we will reduce the number of Siberians with this deadly disease.

Breeders in Scandinavian countries are far more open about HCM than their counterparts in the United States, and they take genetic diseases more seriously. Purchasing a kitten from a cattery that openly discloses cases of HCM is considerably safer than buying a kitten from a cattery that hides the disease. We strongly recommend not purchasing kittens from catteries that do not openly release the pedigrees of their breeding cats.
