Urinary Crystals

Urinary Crystals – FLUTD

Many breeders know this disease as Feline Urological Syndrome, or FUS.

Blockage from lower urinary crystals is seen in both males and females, but is quite dangerous in males – often requiring surgery. This is a concern in many breeds. Special diets and large amounts of water are necessary to prevent repeated blockage.

By 2005, Siberian Research compiled and analyzed data from roughly 5000 Siberians, primarily looking for information on HCM. In asse Veterinary records, we found hundreds with urinary crystals. We reviewed the data with a feline urinary specialist. There was sufficient data to believe the bulk of FLUTD is a dominant hereditary disease in Siberians. Three lines were found to be affected. In the most severe case, urinary crystal were found in one line for six straight generations.

From a breeding perspective, it is highly advisable to promptly remove FLUTD positive cats and their offspring from breeding (abandon the lines).
